Leef jy of bestaan jy net?

Die herinneringe wat jy die langste gaan onthou is die
waar jy jou grootste vrese oorwin het.

‘n Bejaarde dame het eendag vir my gesê; “Jongman ek is liewer 70 jaar jonk as wat ek 30 jaar oud is!” So baie mense wat vandag “lewe”, lewe nie regtig nie – hulle bestaan net! Hulle oorleef van dag tot dag in die hoop dat hulle iewers in die toekoms, as hulle aftree, as hulle geld het, as … as … die dinge gaan doen wat hulle nog graag wil doen.

Ons trek al amper in die helfte van Januarie en hoe lyk jou beplanning vir hierdie jaar? Ek bedoel nie, wat was jou Nuwejaars voornemens nie. Nee, wat is daardie dinge wat jy nog altyd wou doen maar nog nie gedoen het nie, wat jy beplan om hierdie jaar te doen? Is dit in jou dagboek geskryf?

Soos jy in “About me” kan lees, het ek op 30 jarige ouderdom en toe weer op 37 jarige ouderdom twee groot “wake-up calls in my lewe gehad. Dokters het vir my gesê dat die kanse baie skraal is dat ek 40 gaan maak. Ek het met ‘n skok besef dat ek ook maar net mens is en ook soos alle ander mense, een of ander tyd gaan omkap en doodgaan. Dis toe dat ek besluit het om die tyd wat ek oor het op aarde, voluit te leef en al daardie dinge te doen wat ek nog altyd wou doen. Nou, amper 60 jaar jonk (35 jaar met 25 jaar ondervinding), is ek al deur drie “Bucket-lyste” van 50 dinge, “and still going strong!”

Aan die begin van elke jaar, kies ek om drie dinge in die jaar te doen wat ek nog nooit van te vore in my lewe gedoen het nie. Dit kan dinge wees wat ek doen, wat ek vir mense doen, plekke waar ek nog nooit van te vore was nie ens. Dan gaan sit ek en begin om dit te beplan en dan doen ek dit!

Die groot droomsteler is vrees. Mense sê altyd vir my ek is “mal” om al hierdie goed te doen. Foutjie! Ek is net so bang soos jy en alle ander mense vir al hierdie dinge. Die verskil is net, ek is bereid om my vrese te konfronteer en “memories” te bou. Hieronder deel ek drie van die “hoogtepunte” sovêr in my lewe. Swem saam met drie Manta’s in Sodwana, Paraglide in die Alpe en Paraglide in Italië by Lake Garda.

Gaan sit nou en dink watter drie dinge jy gaan doen en begin beplan hoe jy dit gaan laat realiseer.

Do you live or just exist?

The memories you will remember the longest are the
one’s you feared the most, and still did it!

An elderly lady once told me; “Young man I am rather 70 years young than 30 years old!” So many people who “live” today do not really live – they just exist! They survive day by day in the hope that they will somewhere in the future, if they retire, if they have money, if … if … do the things they still want to do.

We’re almost in the middle of January and what are your plans for this year? I don’t mean, what is your New Year’s resolutions. No, what are those things that you have always wanted to do but haven’t as yet done, what do you plan to do in 2019? Is it written in your diary?

As you can read in “About me” on this Webpage, I’ve had two major “Wake-up calls” at the age of 30 and again at 37. Doctors told me that the chances were very slim that I was going to make it to 40 years. I realized with a shock that I was just human and also, like all other people, will someday die. It was then, that I decided to spend my remaining time and years on earth to do all those things that I still wanted to do. Now, almost 60 years old (35 years old with 25 years of experience, hie-hie), I’ve planned and worked my way, through three “Bucket lists” of 50 things, and by grace, I am still going strong!

At the beginning of every year, I choose to do three things that I have never done before in my life. It can be things that I do (Adventurous things). Things that I want to do for others. New places that I’ve never been to before, etc. Then I sit down and start planning it. Then, I just do it!

The great dream-thieve is fear. People always tell me that I’m “crazy” to do all these adventurous things. Mistake! I’m just as scared as you and everybody else to do these things. The only difference is, I’m willing to confront my fears and build lasting memories. Below, I share three of the “highlights” so far in my life. Swimming with three Manta’s in Sodwanabay in South Africa, Paragliding in the Alps (Verbier) and Paragliding in Italy at Mont Baldo, Lake Garda.

Now sit down and think about the three things that you want to do, and are going to do in 2019. Then start planning how you’re going to make it happen.

  1. Charl ek haal my hoed vir jou af. Ek is nou al 75jaar en het nog steeds so baie drome. Ons liewe Vader het ons so wonderlik geskape en vir ons soveel geleenthede gegee. Ek moet nou net ‘n heupvervanging kry dan glo ek ek sal nog gespaar bly om nog van my drome te verwesenlik.
